Phoebe Hessel (1 item)

Phoebe Hessel (1713 - 1821) was a woman who disguied herself as a man in order to stay with her lover in the British Army. Later in life she married a Brighton fisherman and spent her last years in the town. She is buried in St Nicholas Church, having died at the age of 108.
