Description (Object or Artwork): Image appears to be on frontspiece for a book? Title as above. Image of wooden building with arched frontage and sign above 'Crawfords Circulating Library', man and woman in foreground to the right. Two men to the left. In the background behind wooden building, mast of a ship can be seen. Printed below image ' Of purest Air and healing Waves we tell. Where welcome Maid Hygiaea loves to dwell.' Bowen's Library was at the south end of the Steine near the site of the Royal York Hotel. It was founded by Woodgate c.1760 and carried on successively by Widgett, Bowen, Crawford, Fisher and Shaw. Crawford rebuilt it in 1788, four years after he took it over.
