This monochrome photographic print is showing Kachins sacrificing a cow at the Namhkyek manau. Manau is a kind of communal festival celebrated by the Kachins in Burma (Myanmar). A large number of offerings would be made to different spirits at a manau festival, as well as the main offering that would be made to the spirit called 'Madai'.
This photograph was taken by James Henry Green in the 1920s, a recruiting officer for the Burma Rifles who spent more than twenty years in Burma, much of it based in the northern hill states.
