At Chinese New Year, ‘Hong Bao’ (meaning Red Packet) takes place. These red money envelopes are given out to children and unmarried adults. The envelopes contain an even amount of money, as odd numbers are associated with funerals. The red colour is associated with luck and the envelopes are decorated with good luck images.
On this envelope, the dragon represents success and the lettering in the gold symbol means ‘may all your wishes come true’. This is written using bone script, which uses ancient Chinese characters. In the past, these characters were written on animal bones and used to predict the future.
