This magic lantern slide shows the Royal Pavilion estate during its use as an Indian Military Hospital during World War One. It was probably produced by Henry Roberts, the Director of the Pavilion, to illustrate later lectures on the subject. The image shows wounded Indian soldiers recuperating in the Corn Exchange. Prior to the outbreak of war, this building had hosted a weekly corn market since the 1860s. Its large central hall proved an ideal space for a large ward.
