Description: WA0540, Burma image. Palaung village. [Kachin soldier standing] (Researcher's notes in brackets)
'A [Palaung] house for one small family has a large entrance room - the living room of the family - and one or two smaller rooms a the back. These are used as sleeping rooms, or sometimes one is so used and the other serves for storing baskets, pumpkins, &c. Sometimes one roof covers two families. In a Palaung house for one family there are usually two verandas, a large one in front, by which strangers enter, and a smaller one behind, where dishes and pots may be washed and where work of all kinds is done. In a house for two families the verandas - one at each end - are of the same size, and strangers enter at the end of the house occupied by the family that they wish to visit' ['The Home of an Eastern Clan', Leslie Milne, Oxford, 1924, p.214-216]
