Description (Object or Artwork): This painting by Duncan Grant shows a white haired old lady sat on a muave sofa and reading. On her left on the sofa area pile of open books and a basket full of fabrics sits on the floor to her right. A patchwork eiderdown of muted colours rests on her legs. The sitter is Vanessa Bell (1879-1961) sister of Virginia Wolf and wife of Clive Bell. Grant was part of the infamous Bloomsbury set and lived with Vanessa Bell in Charleston House, Firle from 1936 until shortly before his death in 1978.
